FOUNDER, SECOND CHANCE CENTER

Hassan founded Second Chance Center (2012), a community re-entry agency dedicated to the successful transition of people returning from incarceration. SCC has grown to become the preeminent reentry agency in Colorado, maintaining a recidivism rate of under 9 % for participants involved in SCC programs. He conducts mentoring and reentry training for government and non-profit service providers nationally, facilitates transition planning sessions in Colorado Department of Corrections facilities statewide, and authored the book “Never Going Back: 7 Steps to Staying Out of Prison” (PAPatterson Press 2012) along with the curriculum.

KATHLEEN LORD LLC, ATTORNEY AT LAW

Kathleen has represented criminal defendants in the state and federal courts since 1988. She has worked as a federal and state public defender and served as the Chief Appellate Deputy for the Colorado State Public Defender from 1996-2009. She is currently a staff attorney at the Korey Wise Innocence Project at the University of Colorado, School of Law.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, HARM REDUCTION ACTION CENTER

Lisa is the Executive Director of the Harm Reduction Action Center which educates, empowers, and advocates for the health and dignity of Metro-Denver’s injection drug users. The Harm Reduction Action Center was instrumental in the passing of the May 2010 syringe exchange legislation. Past work experiences that brought Lisa to her dream job include working as an AmeriCorps member at a CA syringe exchange, an overnight homeless shelter coordinator, training workshops for ex-offenders, and a former campaign manager for a County Supervisor. Passions include, in her spare time, community advocacy, political organizing, reproductive rights, prisoner rights activism, social justice, syringe exchange, homeless rights, ex-offender literacy, and voter registration coordination specifically targeting former felons, the homeless, and women. Originally from Chicago, Lisa holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications & Women’s Studies from DePaul University.

JFM CONSULTING, LLC

Joe joined the CCJRC Board because of his passion for solutions to mass incarceration, the need for successful and long-lasting re-entry for parolees, and the need for reform of our convoluted criminal justice system. He participates on the CCJRC Board of Directors to make a positive difference in providing justice for all Coloradans. Joe joined the CCJRC Freedom Fighters in 2023, finding it a convenient way to give on a monthly basis. Joe manages his own business, JFM Consulting LLC, consulting with non-profit groups to increase their capacity for fund raising of all types. He also serves as treasurer for City Park Friends and Neighbors (CPFAN). He is an avid gardener, a beekeeper, and enjoys the diversity and community of northeast Denver. Joe and his husband Hukum are 25-year residents of the Whittier neighborhood in northeast Denver.

FORMER CO-EXECUTIVIE DIRECTOR, PROJECT PAVE

Derek is a family man, Denver community member, and was formerly a Co-Executive Director (responsible for Programs and Partnerships) with Project PAVE. As a former collegiate and professional athlete, Derek turned his path toward education back in 2007, when he began teaching and coaching in Colorado’s Mapleton Public schools. Not long after this, in 2011, Derek’s focus in education shifted to Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and Social Justice within his work to promote healthy relationships with PAVE (internal, interpersonal and societal level). All of this experience has led to an interest in making impacts at the advocacy and policy levels of society through partnership with the Colorado Criminal Justice Reform Coalition.

PATLOW FUND

Will runs the Patlow Fund that supports organizations in five focus areas: community development, education, racial justice, women’s rights, and the environment. The Patlow Fund strives to make Denver a more equitable place for black, indigenous, and latinx individuals by funding systemic change. When he’s not working on the Patlow Fund, he works in the kitchen at Potager Restaurant or is going on adventures with his six-year-old daughter, Vivian.

RETIRED, COLORADO COALITION FOR THE HOMELESS

Roz was a registered nurse who graduated from the University of Colorado with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. She was the Program Director of the Homeless Prevention/Rapid Re-housing and Rural Initiatives for the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless/Stout Street Clinic. She has developed, implemented, administered, and evaluated community service and treatment programs, with over 40 years experience as a psychiatric nurse. She is a dedicated community planner and organizer and has successfully managed a multi-disciplinary team in the development of new prevention programs for homeless citizens.
